Este ensayo desarrolla la cosmovisión de Joaquín de Fiore, abad que vivió entre los siglos XII y XIII y un autor que hoy puede ser considerado uno de los precursores del impulso utópico en Occidente, al proponer tres edades sucesivas del desarrollo espiritual de la humanidad, con un nítido sentido del progreso entre ellas. This essay sets forth the worldview of Joachim of Fiore, an abbot who lived between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and may now be regarded as one of the forerunners of the utopian impulse in the West, as he argued for the existence of three successive ages of spiritual development in humanity, with a clear sense of progress from one to the next. In no small measure, argues the author, we still live under the spell of this way of seeing things.
