The goal of this article was to examine differences between the state’s general population and an Indian reservation through the development of a concise and reliable method for assessing differences in opinions held by diverse groups within and between communities. This study used multivariate logistic regression to deductively test and identify critical racial differences in social attributes and attitudes that significantly differentiated reservation American Indians and Montana residents relevant to their opinions regarding tourism development in Montana. The study then used stepwise linear regression to inductively identify factors related to the level of support for increased tourism among Fort Belknap Reservation householders. Finally, logistic regression was again employed to conduct additional analyses to explore which factors were related to opposite tourism opinions found within the Fort Belknap householders. The results of applying logistic regression, along with ordinary linear regression, provide a useful analytic method to identify important aspects to be considered when planning statewide-, reservation-, and community-based tourism development strategies.
