    Desde el descubrimiento del tiempo ‘profundo’, geológico, la imaginación literaria moderna en el siglo XIX se ha apropiado del pasado lejano de la historia de la tierra para articularlo con la historia moderna. Elementos de la historia geológica de la Argentina, que han contribuido de manera decisiva al desarrollo de la paleontología, han sido usados por autores tan diferentes como Honoré de Balzac y Florentino Ameghino para fundar de manera imaginaria los orígenes de la civilización o de la nación presente en el tiempo profundo. Frente a tales apropiaciones del pasado profundo, la literatura contemporánea utiliza el tiempo geológico ya no para anclar el presente en el pasado, sino por el contrario para cuestionar el carácter fundacional de las dinámicas geológicas al umbral de la nueva edad geológica llamada el “Antropoceno”.

    Ever since the discovery of geologic ‘deep time’, modern literary imagination in the 19th century has been using the long time-scale of the history of the earth for its articulation with modern history. Some elements of Argentina’s geologic history, which have played a decisive role in the development of palaeontology, have been used by authors as different as Honoré de Balzac and Florentino Ameghino for an imaginary foundation of present civilizations or nations in deep time. Unlike such appropriations of the deep past, contemporary literature no longer uses geologic time in order to anchor the present in the past, but to question the foundational character of geologic dynamics at the threshold of the new geologic era called the “Anthropocene”.
