Resumen de La milicia urbana de Barcelona en los siglos XVI y XVII

Sólo algunos historiadores se habían preocupado por mencionar en algunos de sus escritos –y prácticamente siempre de forma colateral– una institución militar tan importante como fue la milicia urbana de la ciudad de Barcelona, conocida popularmente en la época como la Coronel·la.
Este trabajo analiza su trayectoria histórica a lo largo de los siglos XVI y XVII, y más especialmente en este último, cuando las sucesivas guerras contra Francia, además de los hechos acontecidos durante la Guerra de los Segadores (1640-1652), obligaron a los barceloneses a proteger sus murallas. No debemos contemplar esta institución militar como un deber impuesto a los habitantes de la ciudad, es decir no debemos verla como la obligación de defender la plaza sin pagar la Corona la soldada, sino como un derecho propio ejercido por los ciudadanos

Only a few historians have taken the trouble to mention in their work – and almost always incidentally – a military institution as important as the urban militia of the city of Barcelona, popularly known at the time as the la Coronel·la. This work analyses its history throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, especially during the latter, when the successive wars with France, apart from the events of the War of the Reapers (1640-1652), forced the citizens of Barcelona to protect their city walls. We should not take this military institution as a duty imposed on the city’s inhabitants, that is we should not see it as the obligation to defend the town without the Crown paying the soldiers’ wages, but rather as a right exercised by the citizens.
