La bibliofilia del rey Alfonso el Magnánimo (†1458) es bien conocida. No sólo mandó copiar libros, sino que también dispuso de una amplia red de corresponsales que se dedicaban a adquirirlos en su nombre. Entre las bibliotecas por las que se interesó se encuentra la que había pertenecido a Bernat d’Esplugues, compuesta de “libres notables e de diverses facultats”. Si bien en un principio dudamos de su existencia, el interés del mismísimo rey de la Corona de Aragón por ella –como lo demuestra la correspondencia real– y la identificación de manuscritos de dicha biblioteca –conservados actualmente en diversos archivos y bibliotecas– nos han permitido certificarla de forma indudable y establecer su categoría como la colección particular conocida más importante de la primera mitad del siglo XV en Barcelona. It is well known that King Alphonse the Magnanimous (†1458) was a bibliophile. He not only ordered books to be copied, but also had an extensive network of agents who acquired them on his behalf. Among the libraries in which he took an interest was that which had belonged to Bernat d’Esplugues, made up of “notable books and from divers faculties”. Notwithstanding any doubts we had originally regarding the library’s existence, the interest shown by the king of the Crown of Aragon himself in it –as demonstrated in the royal correspondence–and the identification of manuscripts from that library– currently held in a number of archives and libraries– has allowed us to prove its existence beyond doubt and establish its being the most important private collection that we know of from the first half of the 15th century in Barcelona. This work likewise offers the personal and professional data that we have been able to gather on this municipal notary public and scribe.
