Este trabajo pretende desarrollar brevemente, a partir de la investigación doctoral del autor en curso, los principales puntos en relación a la participación de españoles como voluntarios en la Légion Étrangère del ejército francés durante la Primera Guerra Mundial (1914-1918). Igualmente, sin avanzar resultados prematuramente, se señalarán cuáles son algunas de las cuestiones, como el número de voluntarios españoles, que hasta ahora no han encontrado una respuesta definitiva y que la tesis doctoral del autor pretende esclarecer en base a nuevas fuentes oficiales hasta ahora inéditas. Además, las plataformas de asistencia a los combatientes serán objeto de especial atención debido a la utilización política que hicieron de la participación armada de voluntarios en la guerra, lo cual está detrás de algunas ideas que la tesis doctoral debe superar definitivamente.

This work aims to briefly develop, from the current doctoral research of the author, the main points in relation to the participation of Spaniards as volunteers in the Légion Étrangère of the French army during the First World War (1914-1918). Likewise, without advancing results prematurely, it will be pointed out which are the issues, such as the number of Spanish volunteers, that until now have not found a definitive answer and that the author’s doctoral thesis aims to clarify based on new official sources hitherto unprecedented. In addition, the assistance platforms for combatants will receive a special attention due to the political use they made of the armed participation of volunteers in the war, which is behind some ideas that the doctoral dissertation should definitely get over.
