Resumen de COVID-19: Una enfermedad que puede hacernos más humanos

  La pandemia del Covid-19, causada por el virus SARS-CoV-2, es una tragedia planetaria que ha causado más de 850.000 muertos y nos ha afectado a todos. Pero también podemos transitar por esta pandemia pensando que es una oportunidad para mejorar muchos aspectos de nuestra vida; por ejemplo, para tener una mayor consideración hacia las personas que comparten con nosotros este planeta sin luz y hacernos más humanos.

  En este texto resumo los 10 temas tratados en la conferencia que impartí el 2 de junio de 2020 a la Real Academia de Doctores de España. Diez aspectos relacionados con la enfermedad que he actualizado a medida que iba progresando nuestro conocimiento. Abarcan temas tan diversos como el origen del virus, la enfermedad, la respuesta del sistema inmunológico, el diagnóstico y sus pruebas, los anticuerpos, la vacuna, ¿cómo protegernos?, ¿cómo saber si la información científica es fiable?, y algunas sugerencias para sobrellevar esta situación de tanta incertidumbre.

  He seleccionado estos temas a partir de las preguntas que me han formulado los pacientes que atiendo, sus familiares, y muchos amigos, durante los meses de marzo a junio 2020. Al contestar sus preguntas he procurado aportar las referencias más actuales, más sólidas, todas verificables, en un lenguaje sencillo, desprovisto de tecnicismos, para ofrecer una información creíble y comprensible.

  Porque entiendo que la pandemia es un problema que a todos nos incumbe y solo desde el conocimiento y la ejemplaridad podremos invocar la necesaria colaboración de todos para hallar una solución, que necesariamente pasa por la solidaridad, por la humanidad.

  The Covid-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a planetary tragedy that has caused more than 850,000 deaths and has affected us all. But we can also go through this pandemic thinking that it is an opportunity to improve many aspects of our lives; for example, to have a greater consideration for the people who share with us this unlighted planet and to make us more human.

  In this text I summarize the 10 topics covered in the conference I gave on June 2, 2020 to the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain. Ten aspects related to the disease that I have updated as our knowledge progressed. They cover topics as diverse as the origin of the virus, the disease, the response of the immunological system, the diagnosis and its tests, antibodies, the vaccine, how to protect ourselves, how to know if the scientific information is reliable, and some suggestions to cope with this situation of so much uncertainty.

  I have selected these topics from the questions asked by the patients I treat, their relatives, and many friends, during the months of March to June 2020. In answering their questions I have tried to provide the most current, most solid references, all verifiable, in simple language, devoid of technicalities, to provide credible and understandable information. Because I understand that the pandemic is a problem that concerns us all, and we are all responsible, only from knowledge and exemplary behavior can we invoke the necessary collaboration to find a solution that necessarily involves solidarity and humanity
