Este trabajo se propone analizar un aspecto en concreto de la civilidad: el de la sexualidad en la Nueva España desde la perspectiva del estudio de las mentalidades históricas. Estudiaremos la misma básicamente a través de los discursos oficiales y las actitudes sociales que se dieron a lo largo de tres siglos de presencia española. La tesis que se defiende en este trabajo consiste en que la doctrina oficial y los comportamientos cotidianos discurrieron por caminos no necesariamente convergentes. Así, para la Iglesia el estado mayor de perfección del ser humano era el celibato. No pudiendo estar éste al alcance de todos, se establecerá el matrimonio como el único medio lícito para tener acceso carnal, siempre con el fin fundamental de la procreación. De esta forma, la influencia teológica sobre el ordenamiento de la sociedad en el mundo hispánico será fundamental para entender no sólo la civilidad, sino sus rupturas.

This paper intends to analyze a particular aspect of civility: sexuality in New Spain from the perspective of the study of historical mentalities, through the study of official discourses and social attitudes that took place over three centuries of Spanish presence in Hispanic America. The thesis defended in this paper is that official doctrine and daily behaviors followed paths not necessarily convergent. For the Church, the highest state of perfection of the human being was celibacy. Given that this was not available to all, marriage was established as the only lawful means to have sexual intercourse, always with the ultimate goal of procreation. In this way, the theological influence on the ordering of society in the Hispanic world will be critical to understand not only civility but their breakups.
