COVID19 no Alentejo: breves notas sobre territórios de baixa densidade e o seu futuro

    Since the beginning of the pandemic, in the context of Mainland Portugal, the Alentejo region has stood out since it has the lowest number of confirmed cases and deaths by Covid-19. Although there are other aspects to consider, the low population density that characterizes Alentejo will always be a key element in understanding the evolution of the pandemic. Taking this eminently geographical phenomenon as a pretext, this article, which unfolds in three moments, begins by carrying out a reflection on the low-density territories in Mainland Portugal, and then rehearsing an approximation to the way in which Covid-19 has manifested itself in the Alentejo region and, finally, address the issue of the future development of low-density territories, taking into account the potential they contain.

    Desde o início da pandemia que, no contexto de Portugal Continental, a região do Alentejo se destacou pelo facto de ser aquela que apresenta o menor número de casos confirmados e de óbitos por Covid-19. Embora existam outros aspetos a considerar, a baixa densidade populacional que caracteriza o Alentejo será sempre um elemento chave para compreender a evolução da pandemia. Tomando este fenómeno eminentemente geográfico como pretexto, este artigo, que se desenrola em três momentos, começa por levar a cabo uma reflexão sobre os territórios de baixa densidade em Portugal Continental, para, depois, ensaiar uma aproximação ao modo como a Covid-19 se tem manifestado na região do Alentejo e, por fim, abordar a problemática do desenvolvimento futuro dos territórios de baixa densidade, tendo em conta o potencial que estes encerram.
