Transizioni e trasposizioni della memoria: Testo e immagine nell’epigrafia funeraria del Sannio romano

    In this paper the authors examine some funerary monuments of the Augustan regio IV (Samnium et Sabina) in which the message is entrusted, as well as to the text, to the image that is next to it. The focus is on images and scenes linked to professional activities, as a mirror of a mentality that looks at the affirmation through work as to a content worthy of being transmitted through words, through images or both. Aim of the paper is to identify the status of the clients of those monuments and to ascertain whether the use of images (or the choice by the performing craftsman to entrust to the image the transmission of information omitted in the text) has a precise chronology; and if it maintains constant characteristics or rather undergoes changes over time and in the territorial and social context considered.

    Nel contributo vengono presi in esame alcuni monumenti funerari della regio IV augustea (Samnium et Sabina) in cui il messaggio è affidato, oltre che al testo, all’immagine che lo accompagna. Vengono in particolare analizzate immagini e scene legate alle attività professionali, come specchio di una mentalità che vedeva nell’affermazione per mezzo del lavoro un contenuto degno di essere trasmesso attraverso la parola, l’immagine o entrambe. Scopo del contributo è di individuare lo status dei committenti dei monumenti e di accertare se il ricorso alle immagini (o la scelta da parte dell’esecutore) di affidare all’immagine la trasmissione di informazioni che il testo ometteva abbia una cronologia precisa; e se mantenga caratteristiche costanti o piuttosto subisca cambiamenti nel tempo e nel contesto territoriale e sociale considerato.
