The re-examination of the relief of Epitynchanus (CIL VI, 166, Capitoline Museums, Room of the Emperors inv. S 504), a dedication to the Nymphs of the personal servant of the young Marcus Aurelius, discovered in 1680 in the Villa Celimontana, gives a new insight into the topography of the southern slopes of the Caelian hill. The relief probably comes from the same place where, a century earlier, Pirro Ligorio had discovered a great nymphaeum and represents a sequence of mythological figures linked to the cult of the waters. In the foreground, at either side of the personification of Fons, the three Graces are depicted holding ears of wheat and two Nymphs while they abduct the young Hylas. In the background on a rocky knoll, two flanking figures of Mercury, carrying a bag and caduceus, and of Hercules in an unusual iconography similar to that of statues, probably indicate the ancient sacred waters of this slope of the Caelian hill.

Il riesame del rilievo di Epitynchanus (CIL VI, 166, Musei Capitolini, Sala degli Imperatori inv. S 504), una dedica alle Ninfe del servitore personale del giovane Marco Aurelio, rinvenuto nel 1680 nella Villa Celimontana, permette di indagare in una nuova luce la topografia delle pendici meridionali del Celio. Il manufatto proviene probabilmente dallo stesso luogo dove Pirro Ligorio un secolo prima aveva rinvenuto un grande ninfeo e rappresenta una sequenza di personaggi mitologici legati al culto delle acque: in primo piano ai alti della personificazione di Fons sono raffigurate le tre Grazie armate di spighe e due Ninfe mentre rapiscono il giovane Ila. In secondo piano su un’altura rocciosa due immagini affiancate di Mercurio armato di borsello e caduceo e di Ercole in un’iconografia insolita, simili a statue, indicano probabilmente antiche acque sacre di questo versante del monte Celio.
