La Orden de San Juan de Jerusalén surgió en la Edad Media con una finalidad hospitalaria y asistencial, aunque por diferentes circunstancias se sometió a un proceso de militarización. Con el paso del tiempo esta institución fue creciendo y consiguió aumentar su prestigio. Fue cambiando de sede, y desde Malta se convirtió en una temida fuerza naval que protegía el mar Mediterráneo y la cristiandad de infieles y piratas. A pesar de ser una orden militar, siempre ha desempeñado una imprescindible función social y asistencial, centrada en la hospitalidad, ofreciendo asistencia sanitaria para los enfermos en sus hospitales, garantizando la provisión de alimentos para todas las personas hambrientas, brindando protección y cobijo a todos los peregrinos a lo largo de sus duros peregrinajes hacia los Santos Lugares, concediendo ayuda y protección a las personas pobres, y rescatando a cautivos que se encontraban en tierras enemigas

The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem emerged in the Middle Ages with a hospitable and assitance purpose, although for different circumstances it underwent a process of militarization. With the passage of time this institution grew and managed to increase its prestige. It changed the headquarters of the Order in multiple times, and from Malta it became a feared naval force that protected the Mediterranean Sea and the Christianity of infidels and pirates. Despite being a military order, it has always played an essential social and welfare function, centered on hospitality, offering health care for the sick in its hospitals, guaranteeing the provision of food for all hungry people, offering protection and shelter to all the pilgrims along their hard pilgrimages to the Holy Places, offering help and protection to the poor, and rescuing captives who were in enemy lands.
