En la actualidad las operaciones militares bélicas tienen lugar la mayoría de ocasiones en zonas urbanas, lo que dificulta la correcta aplicación del principio de distinción. El mecanismo idóneo para lograr la satisfacción del principio de distinción lo constituye la identificación positiva del objetivo militar, con base en el cual debe obtenerse información sobre el bien, objeto o persona que se va atacar y hacer una valoración razonable de la misma antes del ataque.
