  • The manuscript published here, dedicated to Florentine painting between the advent of Giovanni da Milano and about 1420, constitutes the text for lectures given by Roberto Longhi in the academic year 1940-1941 at what was then the Regia Università di Bologna. The material, housed in the archive of the Roberto Longhi Foundation in Florence, was found during a reorganization and cataloguing project. Longhi's customarily elegant prose offers a review of the leading Florentine artists from the turn of fifteenth century, making recurring references to his other writings, with some avenues of research not followed in his later publications.
