Resumen de Signos, maravillas y calamidades: una aproximación a la Peste Negra y los elementos prodigiosos en la Cronica Nuova de Giovanni Villani (s. XIV)

En el presente estudio analizamos la construcción narrativa de la crónica de Giovanni Villani, centrada en los signos, maravillas y catástrofes a fines de la Edad Media. En primer lugar, estudiamos las crisis del siglo XIV, considerando la fractura demográfica originada por la peste negra y los problemas político-sociales de Florencia. En segundo lugar, examinamos el problema del pecado y la noción de calamidad, lo que se expresa mediante un recurrente uso de elementos maravillosos que anuncian catástrofes y situaciones terribles (monstruos, signos y prodigios). Finalmente, la presencia de estas maravillas da cuenta de una visión escatológica, castigo divino y purificación del mal frente a una sociedad perturbada por el miedo y las dificultades de su época.

In this study we analyze the narrative construction of Giovanni Villani’s chronicle, about the signs, wonders and catastrophes at the end of the Middle Ages. First, we study the crises of the 14th century, considering the demographic fracture caused by the Black Death and the political-social problems of Florence. Second, we examine the problem of sin and the notion of calamity. These elements are expressed through a recurrent use of marvelous aspects that announce catastrophes and terrible situations (monsters, signs and wonders). Finally, the presence of these wonders accounts for an eschatological vision, divine punishment and purification of evil in the face of a society disturbed by fear and the difficulties of its time.
