  La sociolinguistique est devenue un domaine internationalement reconnu et plusieurs positions quant à la conception du « socio » y apparaissent aujourd’hui. Les auteurs en examinent trois : la nature sociale du langage ; la création d’un domaine interdisciplinaire ; la relation théorique entre langues et sociétés. Les auteurs développent la notion de sociolinguistique critique proposée en 2002 par M. Heller et l’appliquent au domaine du travail considéré comme une « key situation » (Gumperz).

  Sociolinguistics has become an internationally-recognized field, with, however, a variety of positions as to what « socio » signifies. The authors examine three of these : the social nature of language; interdisciplinarity; and the theoretical relationship between language and society. They go on to develop the concept of critical sociolinguistics, proposed by M. Heller in 2002. They apply this concept to the study of the workplace, conside-red here as a « key situation » (Gumperz).
