O matopiba como realidade geográfica e os desafios para o desenvolvimento sustentável e a proteção ambiental do cerrado

    This work aims to present the historical process involving the territorial delimitation of MATOPIBA (intersection between the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia), in the context of the agricultural expansion in the Cerrado biome, based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of environmental history. The research sought to identify the Cerrado in the historical context of the demographic and agricultural expansion of Central Brazil from the second half of the 20th century.

    Among the analyzed documentation we highlight the reports produced by the Embrapa, that helped us to build a historical picture on the role of agriculture in the conquest and territorial insertion of MATOPIBA and the challenges for understanding and delimiting this territory. The results indicate that the projects for the conquest of the agricultural frontier in MATOPIBA are explained within a process of modernization of agriculture and the expansion of the frontier in the Cerrado, and its geographical reality is an even more recent phenomenon and full of challenges for environmental history.

    Este trabalho objetiva identificar o processo histórico da delimitação territorial do MATOPIBA (intersecção entre os estados do Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia), no contexto da expansão agrícola no Cerrado, com base nos pressupostos teórico-metodológicos da história ambiental. O estudo procurou caracterizar o Cerrado no contexto da expansão demográfica e agrícola do Brasil Central a partir da segunda metade do século XX. A documentação analisada privilegiou os relatórios técnicos da Embrapa produzidos a partir de 2013, auxiliando na construção de um quadro histórico sobre o papel da agricultura na conquista e inserção territorial do MATOPIBA, bem como os desafios para a compreensão e delimitação desse território. Como resultado identificamos que a expansão da fronteira agrícola no MATOPIBA se explica no processo de modernização da agricultura no Cerrado, e a sua configuração geografia é um fenômeno ainda mais recente e cheio de desafios para a historiografia ambiental.
