Sartre's phenomenological approach to works of imagination shows that far from enriching our vision of reality — a standard humanist response about the function of the imagination, as well as a standard understanding of phenomenology — such creations are the constant proof of our estrangement from reality and therefore of our liberty. And it is as such that "realists" refuse them.
