  La UNESCO (2015) define al museo como una institución al servicio de la sociedad, sin ánimo de lucro, cuyos objetivos son conservar, investigar y exponer el patrimonio con fines de educación, estudio y recreo. Esta definición está siendo revisada por un comité internacional con participación ciudadana para adaptarla a la realidad del siglo XXI e incluir aquellas iniciativas privadas como es el caso del Museo Guggenheim Bilbao (ICOM, 2019).

  Atendiendo a la actual definición, el museo desempeña un rol cultural del que se espera una actividad dedicada a la conservación del patrimonio, al estudio y difusión de sus colecciones y al ocio cultural (Fernández, 2003). Por tanto, las actividades de estas tres áreas deben subordinarse a las reglas museísticas que recoge el Código de Deontología del ICOM para los Museos (ICOM, 2004).

  En este sentido, el montaje de sus colecciones responde a un criterio de conservación preventiva que intenta minimizar su deterioro (Lorite y Ferreiro, 1999). En consecuencia, en el interior del museo hay reglas que regulan las relaciones entre el espectador y las colecciones: la mayor parte de las obras no se tocan, solo se observan.

  UNESCO (2015) defines a museum as an institution that serves society, without financial motivation, whose objectives are to conserve, research, and exhibit national cultural heritage for the purposes of education, study, and recreation. This definition is being revised by an international committee with citizen participation in order to adapt it to the realities of the 21st century, while taking into account private initiatives underway at museums such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (ICOM, 2019).

  Based on the current definition, a museum plays a cultural role from which one expects activity dedicated to the conservation, the study and the dissemination of information about their cultural heritage collections and cultural leisure opportunities (Fernandez, 2003).
