    La visión dominante sobre el municipio medieval de Barcelona se basa en la realidad del siglo XV y nos muestra una institución que experimentó pocos cambios significativos desde su nacimiento en 1249. El objetivo de este trabajo es intentar mostrar el proceso que llevó desde la posición de la ciudad de Barcelona como un señorío real más, organizado durante la segunda mitad del siglo XII, hasta el municipio autónomo que, tal como ha sido definido, no existió antes de la segunda mitad del siglo XIV. El análisis de la evolución de las rentas patrimoniales de los monarcas en la ciudad y el lento desarrollo de un sistema fiscal municipal son unos buenos indicadores que permiten caracterizar esas dos realidades históricas sucesivas (el señorío real sobre la ciudad y el municipio autónomo) y comprender el proceso que lleva de una a otra, en tres fases sucesivas: la del señorío real (1100-1280), la de la marcha hacia el municipio autónomo (1280-1370) y la del pleno desarrollo del poder municipal (1370-1450).

    The dominant view of the medieval municipality of Barcelona is based on the reality of the 15th century, presenting an institution that had undergone few significant changes since its emergence in 1249. The objective of this study is to shed light on the process that led from the city of Barcelona's position as just another royal dominion, organised during the last half of the 12th century, to that of an autonomous municipality which, in accordance with its definition, did not exist prior to the last half of the 14th century. The analysis of the evolution of the monarchs' patrimonial revenues in the city, and of the slow development of a municipal tax system provides good indicators allowing a characterisation of these two successive historical realities (the royal dominion over the city and municipal autonomy) and an understanding of the process that led from the former situation to the latter, in three successive phases: the royal dominion (1100-1280), the march towards the autonomous municipality (1280-1570) and the full development of municipal authority (1570-1450).
