    Durante el siglo XVI en el Imperio español se produjo una fuerte controversia sobre los pobres, la pobreza y la limosna, enfrentándose dos corrientes de pensamiento al buscar la solución a este problema. Los partidarios de la nueva corriente apuntaban que era competencia de las autoridades municipales; los defensores de la línea tradicional defendían que era obligación de la Iglesia como lo había sido desde su fundación. Así aparecieron importantes obras literarias que se pueden encuadrar en la corriente del llamado arbitrismo político-moral. En este ambiente surge en Flandes el agustino Lorenzo de Villavicencio, agente de Felipe II, defendiendo la postura clásica y enfrentándose a Juan Luis Vives y Gilles Wyts en su obra que aquí estudiamos.

    During the sixteenth century in the Spanish Empire there was a strong controversy about the poor, poverty and alms, facing two currents of thought when looking for the solution to this problem. The supporters of the new current pointed out that it was the responsibility of the local authorities; the defenders of the traditional line defended that it was the obligation of the Church as it had been since its foundation. Some literary works, published at that time, can be framed in the current of the so-called political-moral arbitrism. In this context, the Augustinian Lorenzo de Villavicencio, Philip II’s spy, arises in Flanders, defending the classical position and confronting Juan Luis Vives and Gilles Wyts in their work that we study here.
