  Ce texte est composé d’extraits du chapitre d’un ouvrage de M. Montgomery portant sur la question du « registre ». Cette notion est ici abordée selon un point de vue microsociologique : il s’agit d’une forme de langage ou de discours adaptée à un contexte et à un type de situation sociale. Le registre peut s’appréhender par la combinaison de trois dimensions : field of discourse (champ du discours : thème et activité en cours, vocabulaires spécifiques), tenor of discourse ( teneur, caractère du discours, ype de relation sociale mis en œuvre) et mode of discourse (moyens de communication du discours, écrit et oral). Ces dimensions configurent les formes linguistiques de l’interlocution et du discours, organisent la situation. L’analyse des données langagières de l’interaction en situation, en tenant compte de ces trois dimensions, permet de remonter à une caractérisation de la situation sociale et du (des) registre(s) mobilisé(s).

  This text is made up of extracts from a chapter of Martin Montgomery's book on the question of "register". The notion is considered from a microsociological viewpoint, as a form of language or discourse adapted to a context and a type of social situation. Register can be considered through a combination of three dimensions : field of discourse (theme and activity being undertaken, specific lexis), tenor of discourse (character of discourse, type of social relationship adopted) and mode of discourse (communication medium for the discourse, spoken or written). These dimensions underpin the linguistic forms of the exchange and of the discourse, and structure the situation. By analysing language data from a situated interaction, and taking account of these three dimensions, it is possible to depict the social situation and the register(s) adopted.
