Resumen de Astonishment: scrivere di stupore e meraviglia, ma senza dimenticare Leopardi

Starting from the recent miscellaneous volume Astonishment. Essays on Wonder (Rome, 2019), which collects essays by English-speaking scholars, it should be noted that in not a few of the aforementioned contributions the idea of Wonder ends up being assumed mostly in ways that are not always in tune with what they should be - in the history of literary poetics - central components of the astonishment: a theme that involves the poetics of the sublime within a wider context. It is no coincidence that the two major eighteenth-century modern theorists of the sublime, Burke and Blair (except for a single, very fleeting mention to Blair in the introduction), who also use the term astonishment with high frequency, are surprisingly ignored in the volume in question; and with them the very young Leopardi is also completely forgotten, already in 1815 he deepened the theme of wonder using the first Italian translations of the main works of the two British authors.

Partendo dal recente volume miscellaneo Astonishment. Essays on Wonder (Roma, 2019), che raccoglie saggi di studiosi anglofoni, si fa notare che in non pochi dei suddetti contributi l’idea di Wonder finisce per lo più per essere assunta con modalità non sempre in sintonia con quelle che dovrebbero essere – nella storia delle poetiche letterarie – componenti centrali dello astonishment: un tema che coinvolge entro un ambito più ampio, le poetiche del sublime. Non a caso i due maggiori teorici moderni settecenteschi del sublime, Burke e Blair (se si eccettua un cenno molto fugace a Blair nella Introduzione), che pure il termine stonishment adottano con alta frequenza, sono sorprendentemente ignorati nel volume in oggetto; e con loro è ignorato del tutto anche il giovanissimo Leopardi, il quale già nel 1815 approfondiva il tema dello stupore utilizzando a piene mani le prime traduzioni italiane delle principali opere dei due autori britannici.
