Resumen de Transfer of learning gained in a programmed learning task

T.N. Davis

  • The experiment commenced with a pilot study at Frederick Nattrass School, Stockton, in order to check and assess the value of a programmed text to be used in the main phase of the experiment.

The main part of the experiment involved Lee Green School, London, and Ainslie Park School, Edinburgh, with a control group, learning by traditional teaching methods, and an experimental group, learning with the programmed text, at both schools.

Both experimental groups using the programmed text method achieved overall superior results on the four tests given to those taught by traditional methods, although results were significant at the 005 level on Test 1 only. This is a finding in favour of programmed learning and supports a majority of studies in the field.

On the two tests which tested the actual subject matter of the program (Tests 1 and 3), both experimental groups did better than their corresponding control groups. If anything, the reverse trend was observed on the two tests set on subject matter related to but not taught by the text.
