El director de cine Nikos Kúnduros es uno de los representantes más importantes del cine neorrealista griego, que floreció en Grecia después de la guerra civil que se libró en el país entre 1946 y 1949. Este movimiento cinematográfico estuvo muy influenciado por otro conflicto bélico que tuvo lugar una década antes: la guerra civil española. Esta breve investigación examinará, a través de análisis pictóricos y semióticos, la película To potami/El río, de Nikos Kúnduros, para dilucidar si este cineasta estuvo influenciado por el conflicto español y cómo se tradujo en su película. Por lo tanto, este proyecto arrojará luz al estudio de los lugares comunes históricos entre Grecia y España, y al mismo tiempo, al emergente campo de los estudios culturales de la Europa meridional.

The film director Nikos Koundouros is one of the most important representatives of the Neorealist Greek Cinema that bloomed in Greece after the Civil War occurred in that country from 1946 to 1949. This film movement was highly influenced by another war conflict that took place a decade before: the Spanish Civil War. This brief research will examine, through pictorial and semiotic analyses, the film To Potami/The River by Nikos Koundouros to elucidate whether this filmmaker was influenced by the Spanish conflict and how he translated it to his film. Therefore, this project will shed light to the study of the common historical grounds of Greece and Spain and, at the same time, to the emergent field of Southern Europe cultural studies.
