    Se realiza en este trabajo una revisión actualizada del estado de conocimiento presente en materia de arrecifes modernos y fósiles, con una aproximación eminentemente geológico-sedimentológica. Se estudian el concepto de arrecife, los factores principales que controlan su formación y evolución, la evolución arrecifal en mares actuales, las facies de complejos arrecifales fósiles, la evolución secular de arrecifes en el tiempo, la diagénesis arrecifal y finalmente se aborda el potencial económico de estos sistemas.

    Lan honetan, arrezife moderno eta fosilei buruz gaur egun dagoen ezagueiaren berrikustapen gaurkotua azaltzen da, ikuspuntu guztiz geologiko-sedimentologikotik. Bertan, arrezife kontzeptua, bere sorrera eta eboluzioa baldintzatzen duten faktore garrantzitsuenak, gaur egungo itsasoetako dinamika arrezifala, konplexu arrezifal fosílen fazieak, diagenesi arrezifala eta azkenik, sistema hauen potentzial ekonomikoa aipatzen dira.

    An updated state of the art on the modern and ancient reefs is presented in this review. The point of view is focused towards a geological-sedimentological approach. The concept of reef is first introduced to follow on with the majar controls on reef inception and development, the reef ecosistem dynamics on modern seas, the facies of ancient reef complexes, the secular variations of reefs through time, the reef diagenesis and finally the economic potential of those systems.
