Resumen de Eficacia, seguridad y tolerabilidad del implante anticonceptivo de varilla única con etogestrel

  Objetivo: realizar una revisión narrativa sobre la eficacia, seguridad y tolerabilidad del implante anticonceptivo de etonogestrel y analizar las barreras que limitan su utilización más amplia.

  Material y métodos: revisión de la literatura focalizada en los aspectos especificados en el objetivo.

  Resultados: existe evidencia que soporta que: el implante de etonogestrel es el método anticonceptivo más eficaz de que disponemos actualmente; que no incrementa el riesgo de tromboembolismo venoso; que la posibilidad de migración del implante es remota; que en general es bien tolerado y presenta tasas de continuidad de uso elevadas; que induce un patrón de sangrado característico que debemos conocer y saber manejar; que presenta algunos efectos beneficiosos no anticonceptivos y que las principales barreras para su uso se basan en el desconocimiento del método y el coste económico.

  Conclusiones: el implante de etonogestrel es un método eficaz y efectivo para evitar un embarazo no deseado y sería deseable que más mujeres lo utilizasen.

  Objective: Conduct a narrative review of the efficacy, safety, tolerability of the etonogestrel contraceptive implant and analyze the barriers that limit its wider use.

  Material and methods: Literature narrative review focused on the aspects specified in the objective.

  Results: There is supporting evidence that: The etonogestrel implant is the most effective contraceptive method we currently have; that it does not increase the risk of venous thromboembolism; that the possibility of implant migration is remote; that in general it is well tolerated and has high rates of continuity of use; that it induces a characteristic bleeding pattern that we must know and know how to handle; that it presents some beneficial non-contraceptive effects and that the main barriers to its use are based on ignorance of the method and the economic cost.

  Conclusions: The etonogestrel implant is an efficient and effective method to avoid an unwanted pregnancy and it would be desirable for more women to use it.
