  • Resumen
    • Increasingly large numbers of students with widely varying background knowledge of chemistry and physics are enrolled into the author's department. The courses are multi‐disciplinary/ inter‐disciplinary, but technological developments in the industry are becoming more important. A conventional lecture course would be unsuitable in this situation and consequently a self‐learning scheme in the form of written course units has been developed to cope with remedial work in these subject areas.

Student questionnaires were used to discover student attitudes to the scheme. The responses to these indicated that length of unit, interest, matching text to objectives and the degree of “ understanding “ of the materials were all important to the students.

Test results indicated that there were small differences in marks between the two courses (HND Institutional Management and Diploma in Home Economics) using the scheme. Correlations between student attitudes and test marks showed that units which, relatively, take a long time to complete, are difficult, lack interest, contain too much information and give rise to poor test performance.
