This article explores the problems of organising and running an “ on‐demand “ learning resource facility for individual students from a wide range of backgrounds. It describes the organisation of such a facility for use by the community at large, emphasising the need for a large collection of material and the difficulties of providing on‐going tutorial help. The need for diagnostic work with new students is discussed in detail and some observations are offered on the problems of assessing, indexing and retrieving learning material for individual use. Some conclusions are offered on what are the most important elements to consider when establishing such a service.
