    El problema del desuso de lugares de culto afecta hoy en día a numerosas regiones de Occidente, ligadas a un proceso de secularización avanzada. Al mismo tiempo que las Iglesias particulares toman mayor conciencia del valor histórico-artístico y simbólico de sus edificios sagrados, reflexionan sobre el uso que puede darse a los templos que ya no tienen culto. El artículo afronta esta compleja situación profundizando la normativa contenida en el can. 1222 sobre las posibles causas graves que justifiquen la reducción de una iglesia a un uso profano no sórdido, desde el magisterio actual del Papa Francisco y la jurisprudencia sobre esta cuestión del Tribunal Supremo de la Signatura Apostólica

    The problem of the misuse of places of worship today affects many regions of the West, linked to a process of advanced secularization. At the same time that the particular Churches become more aware of the historical-artistic and symbolic value of their sacred buildings, they reflect on the use that can be given to the temples that no longer have worship. The article addresses this complex situation by deepening the regulations contained in can. 1222 on the possible serious causes that justify the reduction of a church to a profane, not sordid use, from the current magisterium of Pope Francis and the jurisprudence on this question of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.
