Durante la guerra de Crimea (1853-1856), el gobierno español fue invita-do, en repetidas ocasiones, por las potencias aliadas -Francia y Gran Bretaña- a sumarse a su acuerdo militar y diplomático contra el Imperio ruso. En este contexto, la emperatriz Eugenia intentó que su cuñado, el duque de Alba, realizara una delicada y secreta misión no oficial: conocer la reacción del gobierno de Madrid si Francia le presentaba la oferta de organizar un cuerpo de voluntarios españoles con destino a Crimea. Ante el fracaso de esta gestión, algunos historiadores, como Jean des Cars, menospreciaron la capacidad de la elite política española del momento, a diferencia de la del reino de Piamonte-Cerdeña. Sin embargo, debe tenerse en cuenta otros factores -económicos, sociales y militares- que explican ese fracaso, al igual que la mayoría de las presiones que, antes y después, ejercieron los aliados sobre España.

During the Crimean War (1853-1856), the Spanish government was re-peatedly invited by the Allied powers - France and Britain - to join their military and diplomatic alliance against the Russian Empire. In this con-text, Empress Eugenie tried to have her brother-in-law, the Duke of Alba, carry out a delicate and secret unofficial mission: to know the reaction of the Madrid government if France presented him with the offer to organize a brigade of Spanish volunteers bound for Crimea. Given the failure of this administration, some historians, such as Jean des Cars, belittled the ability of the Spanish political elite of this moment, unlike that of the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. However, other factors must be taken into account - economic, social and military - that explain this failure, as well as most of the pressures that, before and after, the allies exerted on Spain.
