    En mayo de 1968, la visita de una decena de jóvenes extranjeros que se identificaban como hippies causó un amplio pánico moral en los medios, las autoridades y la sociedad costarricense.

    Este artículo analiza el acontecimiento a través de las memorias juveniles y la información periodística sobre esos días. Para lograrlo, el texto se divide en tres momentos: primero, presenta la discusión que antecedió la visita; en un segundo instante, estudia las respuestas de las autoridades asociadas al pánico. La tercera parte analiza las posturas de la sociedad frente al acontecimiento. El texto concluye con una valoración del papel que tuvo el evento en las discusiones sobre las identidades juveniles en Costa Rica para evaluar las acciones de la juventud en ese contexto y comprenderlas en una dimensión inaugural y en el marco transnacional de un año icónico para las juventudes de la Guerra Fría.

    In May 1968, the visit of a dozen young foreigners who identified themselves as hippies provoked widespread moral panic in the media, amongst the authorities and the Costa Rican society. This article analyzes the event through the memories of the youth and newspaper articles of those days. To do so, the text is divided in three parts: first, it presents the discussion sparked by the visit. Second, it examines the actions of the authorities regarding the panic. Third, it analyzes the public opinion in the proceedings of this event. The article concludes assessing the role that the visit of the hippies played in the discussions on youth identities in Costa Rica, with the aim of evaluating the young people’s actions in that context, understanding these actions as initial responses, while also placing them in the transnational framework of an iconic year for the youth of the Cold War.
