La definición del hombre es para Ortega el problema más hondamente filosófico. Cae entonces preguntarse quién es el hombre realmente. el hombre es un lobo para el hombre y es, al mismo tiempo, hijo de Dios, ser adánico y paradisíaco, heredero del pecado original. El hombre es, posiblemente, el ser más inadaptado a su entorno, y en consecuencia, el que se ha visto forzado a transformarlo hasta prácticamente generarlo de nuevo desde cero.
