    Los trabajos sobre atenuación en registros formales han abordado el fenómeno desde los géneros académicos fundamentalmente (Hyland, 1996; García-Negroni, 2005; Markkanen y Schröder, 1997). Estos estudios han contribuido positivamente a la descripción de la actividad atenuadora, ayudando a reforzar la hipótesis ampliamente refrendada por la comunidad científica de que atenuación y cortesía no son equivalentes (Hernández Flores, 2002, p. 57; 2004, pp. 98-99; Bravo, 2002, p. 101; Albelda y Briz, 2010 y Briz, 2012a). Sorprende, sin embargo, que puedan hallarse pocas investigaciones (como el trabajo de Martinovski,  2006) que aborden el estudio de la atenuación en uno de los géneros que se señalan como prototipo del registro formal (oral), los juicios orales. En relación con lo anterior, este trabajo quiere contribuir a la extensión el estudio de las funciones y los mecanismos de atenuación a otros géneros y para ello es indispensable partir de una metodología adecuada. De ahí que el objetivo de este trabajo sea valorar en qué medida la propuesta teórico-metodológica de Briz y Albelda (2013) para el proyecto ES.VAR. ATENUACIÓN es aplicable a otros géneros y, más concretamente, a los juicios orales o vistas.

    Papers about mitigation in formal registers have addressed the phenomenon mainly from academic genres (Hyland 1996, Garcia-Negroni, 2005; Markkanen and Schröder. 1997). These studies have contributed positively to the description of the attenuating activity, helping to strengthen the hypothesis widely endorsed by the scientific community, that mitigation and politeness are not equivalent (Hernández Flores,  2002, p. 57; 2004: 98-99; Bravo,  2002, p. 101; Briz and Albeldam, 2010 and Briz, 2012a). However, little research can be found (except for that of Martinovski, 2006) that addresses the study of attenuation in trials, one of the genres that are designated as prototype of the formal oral register. Therefore, this paper aims to contribute to expand the study of the functions and mechanisms of mitigation to other genres and, in order to do that, a suitable methodology is indispensable. Hence, the aim of this paper is to assess to what extent the theoretical and methodological approach of Briz and Albelda (2013) for ES.VAR.ATENUACIÓN project is applicable to other genres and, more specifically, trials.
