    This article aims to explore for the first time the entire career of the etcher, indiennes maker and publisher Louis David (1644-vers 1718), spent in Paris and then in Avignon. After an initial collaboration with his father in the field of engraving in Paris, Louis David expanded his production and took part in the beginning of indiennes’s fabrication in France. The acquired skills in this field and the his wife family’s presence pushed him to move in 1677 to Avignon, at the time under the papal authority, where he opened the first atelier of indiennes in the city. In addition to these production, that he’d never abandoned, Louis David was active as a engraver for distinguished patrons, as a imagier and also as publisher since 1683.

    Cette contribution se propose d’explorer pour la première fois l’ensemble de la carrière du graveur, fabricant d’indiennes et éditeur Louis David (1644-vers 1718), menée à Paris puis à Avignon. Après une collaboration initiale avec son père dans le domaine de l’estampe à Paris, Louis David diversifia sa production et participa à la naissance de la fabrication des indiennes en France. Les compétences acquises dans ce domaine et la présence de la famille de sa femme le poussèrent à s’établir en 1677 à Avignon, alors sous l’autorité papale, où il ouvrit le premier atelier d’indiennes de la ville. Parallèlement à cette production, qu’il n’abandonna jamais, Louis David fut actif à Avignon en tant que graveur pour d’illustres commanditaires, imagier et aussi éditeur à partir de 1683.
