During the presidency of Arturo Frondizi (1958-1962), Patagonia occupied a central place. By assigning a leading role to the south in the industrialisation of the country, Frondizi brought Patagonia into the central narrative of the history of the nation. Although he associated the region with the notions of «desert» and «civilisation», he updated these terms and gave them a renewed function. Within political discourse, he portrayed his policies as part of a historical continuum that reached back to the military campaign to the «desert» of 1879, which definitively put an end to the domination of the south by indigenous peoples. To be sure, this perspective intersected discursively with the image of the Patagonia and became a dominant rhetorical devise in the second half of the twentieth century.
