    L’article mostra la formació del bisbe Dr. Josep Pont i Gol i la seva actuació en la diòcesi de Sogorb i Sogorb-Castelló (1951-1970). La seva praxi pastoral era innovadora respecte de la concepció dominant del nacionalcatolicisme, i buscava la independència de l’Església del poder civil. La seva figura no ha estat estudiada en profunditat, malgrat la seva aportació cabdal al Concili Vaticà II.

    Defensor de l’ecumenisme, de la llibertat religiosa, del compromís de l’Església en el món, del paper del laïcat i de la utilització de les llengües vernacles en la litúrgia, se situà en el grup de bisbes espanyols aperturistes més compromesos en l’aplicació de les doctrines conciliars enfront dels partidaris del tradicionalisme conservador.

    This article presents the education of Bishop Dr. Josep Pont i Gol and his actions in the diocese of Sogorb and Sogorb-Castelló (1951-1970). His pastoral work was innovative compared with the dominant notion of National Catholicism, aiming to separate the Church from civil powers. His figure has not been studied in depth, despite his major contribution to the Second Vatican Council. Being a defender of ecumenism, religious freedom and the Church’s commitment to the world, as well as the role of secularism and the use of vernacular language in the liturgy, he belongs to the group of Spanish bishops who were most open and committed to the application of the Council’s doctrines against those in favour of conservative traditionalism.
