Un nuevo Edén para un nuevo Adán. Ejemplo del ascenso de la burguesía vizcaína al poder a inicios de la Edad Moderna (1475-1541)

    Durante el tránsito de la Edad Media a la Moderna en Vizcaya, Adán de Careaga (ca. 1475-1541) personifica las características y el auge de una nueva clase social, la burguesía, que aprovechó las oportunidades del naciente estado moderno castellano para alcanzar altas cotas de poder y acaparar los cargos públicos tanto en las entidades locales -en su caso, Marquina- como en las territoriales. Versado en leyes, comerciante, ferrón y rentista fundiario, su trayectoria vital estuvo en buena medida condicionada por el enfrentamiento de su familia con una de las parentelas feudales; ambas siguieron una compleja estrategia de enlaces matrimoniales en la que lo económico fue siempre de la mano con lo político. En esa tesitura, Adán mantuvo una actitud doble y complementaria, que unía a parámetros tradicionales otros absolutamente innovadores.

    During the transitional years from the Late Middle Ages to the Early Modernity in Bizkaia, Adan de Careaga (ca. 1475-1541) is an excellent example of the rise and characteristics of a new social class, the bourgeoisie. The newly organized state of the Kingdom of Castilla offered the bourgeois some opportunities to arrive at the highest power levels and, therefore, to be appointed to many public offices, both in local institutions (of Markina, in our protagonist’s case) and in the territorial ones. Careaga acted as a lawyer, merchant, ironworks-owner and landlord, but his life was mostly conditioned by the clash between his family and a feudal lineage; the two families developed a very complicated marriage strategy, in which economics and politics were tightly linked. Adan dealed with such a situation by means of a two-sided attitude, not only using very traditional ways, but also absolutely innovative ones.

    Bizkaian, Erdi Arotik Aro Modernorako iragapenean, Adan de Careaga (ca. 1475-1541) eredu bikaina dugu gizate-klase berri baten ezaugarriak eta goraldia erakusteko, burgesiarenak, alegia. Gaztelako Erresuman estatu modernoa garatzen ari zenez gero, burgesei aukera asko eskaintzen zitzaien goi mailako botereaz jabe zitezen eta, ondorioz, hainbat kargu publikotan izendatuak izan zitezen, bai tokiko erakundeetan (gure pertsonaiaren kasuan, Markinan), baita lurraldekoetan ere. Legelaria, merkataria, burdinolen jabea eta lur-errentaduna zen Careaga, baina, batez ere, bizitza baldintzatu zion handiki-leinu feudal batekiko sendiaren gatazkak; senitarte biek ezkontza-estrategia oso konplikatua eraiki zuten, non ekonomia eta politika hertsiki lotu baitzuten.
