    This article provides an overview of the evolution of different borrowing mechanisms in rural Catalonia in the 18th century, based on the example of the Garrigues region. Analysing the activity recorded by notaries in the region, we observe how censals, the absolute stars of the credit market during the modern period, began to fall in significance throughout the 18th century, and especially during its second half. Sales by letter of grace, on the other hand, after an initial upturn in debits, became the main mechanism of agricultural credit at the end of the century. This substitution was due to a multituide of causes, including the increase in peasant debt, the reduction of censal pensions and, above all, an interest in gaining control of the land, which marked a point of difference with other, drier regions of Catalonia.

    El present article aporta una visió de l’evolució de diferents mecanismes d’endeutament a la Catalunya rural del segle XVIII partint de l’exemple de la comarca de les Garrigues. Analitzant l’activitat registrada pels notaris de la comarca, observem com els censals, protagonistes absoluts del mercat creditici durant els segles moderns, comencen a perdre la seva hegemonia al llarg del segle xviii, sobretot durant la segona meitat. Les vendes a carta de gràcia, en canvi, després d’un primer repunt dels debitoris, esdevindran el mecanisme hegemònic del crèdit agrari de finals de segle. Una substitució que es deu a un conglomerat de causes, d’entre les quals destaquem l’increment de l’endeutament pagès, la reducció de les pensions de censal i, sobretot, l’interès per aconseguir el control de la terra, que marcarà el punt diferencial amb altres regions de la Catalunya seca.
