    Este artículo analiza desde un nuevo enfoque la expedición que Juan José de Vértiz comandó contra la avanzada portuguesa en la frontera de Río Grande a finales de 1773. El objetivo es estudiar su organización puesta en el contexto de las reformas borbónicas y la reestructuración del aparato militar rioplatense, que en los hechos fue y funcionó de modo muy distinto a lo planificado. Este análisis profundiza sobre algunos ejes centrales de este proceso, y la forma en que fue encarado por las autoridades locales. En conclusión, se observa que la creación del Virreinato del Río de la Plata en 1776 respondió en gran medida a los desafíos de la reforma militar, y de un proceso de militarización de raíces mucho más profundas y complejas de las tradicionalmente consideradas.

    This paper analyses the expedition against the Portuguese advance party commanded by Juan José de Vértiz in the border of Río Grande at the end of 1773 taking a different approach. The purpose is to examine its organization in the context of the Bourbon Reforms and the restructuring of the River Plate military apparatus which, in fact, was and worked in a very dissimilar manner from planned. This analysis delves into some focal points of this process and the way in which it was handled by the local authorities. It is concluded that the creation of the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata in 1776 was, to a great extent, a response to the challenges encountered in the military reform and to a militarization process with deeper and more complex roots than the ones traditionally thought about.
