  A partir de 1989, el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona ha decidido dar un nuevo impulso a los órganos municipales dedicados a la investigación histórico-arqueológica, a la custodia, tratamiento y exhibición pública de materiales históricos y a la divulgación del pasado de la ciudad.

  Para ello, se ha procedido a reunificar los servicios existentes bajo el ya clásico rótulo de Instituto Municipal de Historia y a redefinir sus objetivos. El importante desarrollo de las actividades desde el ya lejano 1943 arroja como balance positivo la existencia de cuatro centros fuertemente caracterizados: el Archivo Histórico de la Ciudad, el Centro de Arqueología de la Ciudad, el Museo de Historia de la Ciudad y el Museo del Monasterio de Pedralbes. El Instituto Municipal de Historia es concebido en este nuevo contexto como un organismo central destinado a potenciar y coordinar las actividades de dichos centros y a proyectarlas con mayor eficacia hacia el exterior.

  Since 1989, Barcelona City Council has given renewed support to the municipal organisms engaged in historical and archaeological research, the conservation, treatment and public exhibition of historical materials and the dissemination of information about the city's past.

  To this end the existing services have been reunified under the now classical aegis of the Municipal History Institute, and their aims redefined. The positive result of all the important work carried out since now-distant 1943 is the existence of four centres, each with a strong identity: the Historical Archive of the City, the City Archaeological Centre, the Museum of the History of the City and the Museum of the Monastery of Pedralbes. Within this new context the Municipal History Institute is conceived as a central organism geared to promoting and coordinating the activities of these centres and enhancing their status further afield.
