  • Resumen
    • English Language Teaching (ELT) is a longstanding tradition in Kuwait. This is because of the ever‐increasing demand for English, which in addition to Arabic is needed for travel, certain jobs and tertiary education in Kuwait and abroad. In 1962, the aural/oral approach was adopted and with it audiovisual aids such as flash cards, wall pictures and tapes started to be used. However, with the growing interest in teaching communicative (rather than just linguistic) competence, revision of the ELT materials incorporated more life‐like situations for language practice and other educational media have also been added. The use of ‘realia’ has been incorporated in the teaching materials; listening comprehension in the language laboratory or with the help of cassette recorders has been increased and a CCTV English programme is being prepared. The teachers’ understanding of the functional nature of language and accordingly their techniques of teaching English through various media are being improved. It is hoped that eventually a functional syllabus will replace the structurally organised existing one.
