The new Faculty of Medicine at the University of Newcastle, NSW, has introduced an innovative undergraduate education programme. It has been just as determined to set up a comprehensive and systematic programme for evaluation of the effectiveness, efficiency and acceptability of its educational endeavours. This paper outlines these developments and the constraints during the first year of its operation — not only as a record of events, but also a possible guide for similar developments elsewhere.
