    Guimerà’s Hauptwerke entstanden überwiegend während der Epoche des Modernisme. Daher findet man in seinen Stücken in mehr oder weniger großem Umfang klare Einflüsse dieser Bewegung. Aber es ist insbesondere in der Komödie La santa espina, in der sich viele Merkmale wie Natur, Phantasie, Religiosität, Katalanismus und Nationalismus in so eindeutiger Weise anhäufen, dass sich dieses Stück zweifelsohne als ein Vertreter des Modernisme klassifizieren lässt. Diese typischen Hinweise findet man sowohl in der Handlung, in den Personen und bei den geheimnisvollen Orten, an denen die Handlung spielt, als auch in der Musik von Enric Morera, einem modernistischen Komponisten, dessen Melodien, Lieder und Sardanes zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts zu den bedeutendsten und emblematischsten in Katalonien zählten.

    Guimerà’s most important plays were written primarily during the epoch of the Catalan Modernisme. Therefore, evident influences of this movement appear to a greater or lesser extent in his theatre works. However, the presence of many such elements in the comedy La santa espina (such as nature, fantasy, religiosity, catalanism and nationalism) argues that this play must be classified as representative of Modernisme. These typical modernistic features can be found in the plot, in the protagonists, in the mysterious settings the action takes place in, as well as in the music by Enric Morera, a Modernist composer, whose melodies, songs and sardanes count among the most important and emblematic in Catalonia of the beginning of the 20th century.
