  • The paper lists some 45 published accounts of research in the field of production and audience variables in educational film and television. Each citation is annotated. The citations are preceded by a brief review of the field, arranged under the headings ‘production techniques’, ‘audience and environment variables’ and ‘future directions of research’. The point is made that past research has not fitted into any theoretical framework, and that the present state of knowledge in this important area is of little help in the efficient design of audiovisual teaching materials.
