This article describes a system which makes possible an analysis of all the elements of teacher‐student communication. The system, known as transactional analysis, was developed by Dr Eric Berne. It allows the accurate identification of the various parts of the personality, and offers simple rules of communication which help to avoid personality clashes. These aspects of transactional analysis are explained in the context of the teaching situation with the suggestion that they greatly influence what is often called teaching style. Some of the more repetitive patterns of classroom interaction are described as psychological games. These are both manipulative and harmful.
