One of the most important changes affecting archaeological practice in recent decades has been the generalization of intervention archaeology which, geared to operations designed to transform the landscape, have far outweighed, in both qualitative and quantitative terms, the purely academic initiative, at one time predominant but now reduced to a virtually testimonial presence. The informative potential of this kind of archaeological practice is enormous and its contributions to historical knowledge are already very important. However, despite this, more often than not its objectives seem to be rather different, being lirnited to achieving the conservation and integration of what is discovered, to which end enormous efforts of ali kinds are directed. The aesthetic qualities of ruins and their supposed value as a reminder of the past frequently supplant their actual understanding. Intellectually speaking, the purpose of archaeological intervention is not so much to leave ruins or remains open to view, however beautiful or suggestive they might be, but rather to exploit as fully as possible their capacity to generate historically significant information, independently of the final destination of the remains unearthed.

However, it is extremely doubtful that such scientific exploitation is generally or even efficiently carried out.Too often excavations result in magnificently descriptive studies where the micro-historical anecdote substitutes an understanding of the historical nature of the site and its evolution. Information from sites almost always takes the form of endless inventaries of unearthed materials and careful dissections of the structures found, to the detriment of contextualization and synthesis. This perspective simply facilitates the curnulative juxtaposition of "data", while impeding their integration with contributions from other disciplines. As a nurnber of examples demonstrate, the study of archaeological materials is meaningful and fully functional if its objectives are geared towards the analysis of the genesis and evolution of the social environment, and not considered as a simple academic contribution. Such studies should be seen as a contribution to the analysis of the current situation and the preparation of proposals which will transform that situation.

The contradictions between the scientific and historie exploitation of archaeol ogical materials and sterile erudition or aestheticism are particularly clear in urban archaeology. Excavating in a built-up area is not always synonymous with urban archaeology. Digging up layers of soil is just one analytical and documentary resource in archaeological practice; the objective of the latter entails a global study of the historical and urban evolution of a city based on the archaeological materials available, whether underground or on the surface, i.e., in the urban fabric and the actual buildings. So urban archaeology should be urban history, an d definitely not the accurnulation of isolated essays on the pottery and earthen ware found at a couple of sites or the construction methods apparent from the ruins of buildings. Today, in the light of a long period of urban excavations, we n eed to ask ourselves to what extent they have contributed positively to the historie understanding of each city and of urban development in general. The an swer to this question does not exactly hold out hope for the future.

Azken hamarkadan arkeologi-praktikak izan dituen aldakuntzen arteko garrantzizkoenetariko bat, interbentzioko arkeologia hedatzea izan da, espazioa aldatzeko eragiketekin artikulatuta, lehen nagusia eta orain oso txik:ia den jarduketa akademikoa kalitatez eta kopuruz gainditu duela. Argibidezko bere ahalmena erraldoia eta historiaren ezagupiderako bere laguntza oso garrantzizkoa da biana, hala ere, sarri askotan, bere helburuak beste batzuzk direla, somatzen denaren artapen eta integrazioa lortzera bakarrik murrizten direla dirudi, horretarako, era denetako izugarrizko ahaleginak egiten direla. Aztama batzuen estetizismoa eta ustez duten ebokaziorako balioak ordeztu egiten dute sarritan euren ulerbidea.Intelektualki hitzeginaz, interbentzio arkeologikoen helburua ez dirudi denik aztarna on batzuk ikusita uztea, hauek oso eder eta iradokigarriak izan daitezkela, historiaren ikuspegitik adierazkorra den argibidea sortzeko euren gaitasunaren ustiapen osoa baino, lurretik ateratako aztamen azken norakoa zein den alde batera utzirik.

Lur-sakonketak sarriegi amaitzen dira deskripziozko preziosismo baten azterlanetan, zeintzuetan, gertaera mikrohistorikoak, meagunearen eta bere bilakaeraren izaera historikoaren ulermena ordeztu egiten baitu. Hondakinezko gaien irnitorio amaitezinak eta aurkituriko egituren disekzio esmeratuak izaten dira ia beti aportatzen den argibidearen zatirik garrantzizkoena, kontestualizazioa eta sintesia alde batera utzita. Albisteko izaera honek "datuen" pilaketazko elkarketa bakarrik ahalbidetzen du, baina eragotzi egiten du beste disziplinetako aportazioekin artikulatzea. Zenbait adibidek frogatzen duten bezala, erregistro arkeologikoaren azterketak, bere helburuak gizarte-espazioaren sorrera eta bilakaera aztertzera zuzentzen badira bakarrik du zentzua eta egiazko eraginkortasuna, aipatu sorrera eta bilakera, jakintsuen aportazio soil bat gisara baino, eguneko errealitatea aztertzeko eta aldatze bidezko proposamenak egiteko kontribuzio bezala ulertuz. Erregistro arkeologikoaren zientzi, historiazko ustiapen baten eta erudizio edo estetizismoaren arteko kontrajarpenak argiro agertzen dira hiriko arkeologian. Herri batean lurra sakontzea ez da beti hiriko arkeologiaren sinonimoa. Lurrean berbilatzea arkeologiaren baliabide analitiko eta dokumentuzkoa baino ez da, bere helburua, bai lurrazpiko eta baita aidezko, hau da, hiri-multzoa eta eraikitako multzoa, erregistro arkeologikoan oinarrituz, hiri baten historia-hirigintzako bilakaeraren azterketa osoan gauzatzen dela. Honen ondorioz, hiriko arkeologia hiriko historia izan behar du, eta ez zenbait orubetan somatu den kerarnikari edo zenbait eraikinetako aztamen eraikitze-ezaugarriei buruzko monografien pilaketa. Gaur egun, hirigunean sakonketak egiteko aldi luze baten ikuspegitik, hauek, hiri bakoitzaren eta hirigintza orokorraren ezagupide historikorako zein neurritaraino positiboki lagundu ote duten galde dezakegu eta, dirudienez, galdera honi erantzuna ez de oso baikorra.
