This paper describes an experiment in reasoning. An attempt is made to discover why an apparently simple logic task causes problems. An initial group investigation is followed by the experiment, firstly to test the hypothesis that subjects presented with a ‘four‐card’ problem make some irrational responses, and secondly to try to establish that successful completion of a programmed text would reduce the level of such irrational responses. The investigation identified several weaknesses in the presentation of material which were indicated in the experiment; hence, the results were gained from an ‘objective’ situation and the merits of a programmed text approach provided an interesting attempt to clarify problems of operational thought.
