  • Resumen
    • This paper describes the essential features of a method of teaching general chemistry according to the Personalised System of Instruction (PSI), popularly known as the Keller Plan or Self‐Paced Learning Method. The paper gives a brief description of the course and the methodology involved, followed by an evaluation of the Self‐Paced Learning Method. Evaluation has been attempted by three means: (a) the response of the students in the class, (b) the performance in the final examination, and (c) a follow‐up study of the performance of Keller Plan students in subsequent chemistry courses. Student response was overwhelmingly favourable. Analysis of the final examinations gave the instructor much information concerning the strengths and weaknesses of the units in the course. The performance of Keller Plan students in further chemistry courses suggests that the PSI method prepares students well for a certain type of chemistry course, but in other courses the Keller Plan students perform no better than other groups of students.
