The interest towards the discovery of a suitable treatment for the increasingly frequent neurodegenerative diseases has led to the finding that epigenetics is at their basis. In this review, an insight on the main epigenetic events that normally take place inside the cells is provided, and the causal relationship between aberrant epigenetic regulation and neurodegenerative diseases is explained. The potential of some natural substances in counteracting these disorders has recently been uncovered, as they seem to intervene in epigenetics regulation so as to restore a healthy gene expression. These findings set the basis for the treatment of such diseases in a completely innovative way.
